The position comes from a survey, so expect to be within a few metres rather than standing at the trunk.
Is this the one?
What to check when you get there.
- It should be a hornbeam.
- It's 3.6 m round the trunk. That's the easiest check there is.
- It's a phoenix tree: it fell over and kept growing, so look for a trunk on the ground with branches standing up from it like new trees.
- It's recorded as fallen, so look for a big trunk lying on the ground.
- People round here may know it as Hatfield Forest Phoenix Hornbeam, and there's sometimes a sign.
- The position came from a surveyor, so it can be a few metres out. If two big trees are close together, the girth usually settles it.
