Where it is

Melmerby, North Yorkshire

The position comes from a survey, so expect to be within a few metres rather than standing at the trunk.

Is this the one?

What to check when you get there.

  • It should be a wild apple.
  • It's 4.6 m round the trunk, about 3 people holding hands round it. That's the easiest check there is.
  • It's part of a laid hedge, so look along the hedge line for a trunk bent over and grown along the ground.
  • Only part of it is still standing, so look for a shell or a broken trunk rather than a whole tree.
  • People round here may know it as The Melmerby Crab, and there's sometimes a sign.
  • The position came from a surveyor, so it can be a few metres out. If two big trees are close together, the girth usually settles it.
