The position comes from a survey, so expect to be within a few metres rather than standing at the trunk.
Is this the one?
What to check when you get there.
- It should be an alder.
- It's 14.8 m round the trunk, about 10 people holding hands round it. That's the easiest check there is.
- It's a coppice: cut at the base long ago, so look for a ring of stems coming out of one wide stool at ground level.
- People round here may know it as Mistley Alder Coppice, and there's sometimes a sign.
- The position came from a surveyor, so it can be a few metres out. If two big trees are close together, the girth usually settles it.
