Where it is

Heythrop, Oxfordshire

The position comes from a survey, so expect to be within a few metres rather than standing at the trunk.

Is this the one?

What to check when you get there.

  • It should be a holm oak.
  • It's 9 m round the trunk, about 6 people holding hands round it. That's the easiest check there is.
  • It's a coppice: cut at the base long ago, so look for a ring of stems coming out of one wide stool at ground level.
  • Only part of it is still standing, so look for a shell or a broken trunk rather than a whole tree.
  • The position came from a surveyor, so it can be a few metres out. If two big trees are close together, the girth usually settles it.
