The position comes from a survey, so expect to be within a few metres rather than standing at the trunk.
Is this the one?
What to check when you get there.
- It should be a pedunculate oak.
- It's 6.1 m round the trunk, about 4 people holding hands round it. That's the easiest check there is.
- It's a maiden: one trunk, never cut back, so look for a single tall stem.
- It's recorded as fallen, so look for a big trunk lying on the ground.
- People round here may know it as Canning's Oak, and there's sometimes a sign.
- The position came from a surveyor, so it can be a few metres out. If two big trees are close together, the girth usually settles it.
