The position comes from a survey, so expect to be within a few metres rather than standing at the trunk.

Is this the one?

What to check when you get there.

  • It should be a pedunculate oak.
  • It's 7.2 m round the trunk, about 5 people holding hands round it. That's the easiest check there is.
  • It's a pollard: cut back at about head height long ago, so look for a thick trunk ending in a knuckle, with branches all growing out of that one level.
  • It's recorded as dead, so expect bare wood and no leaves.
  • People round here may know it as King of the Forest, and there's sometimes a sign.
  • The position came from a surveyor, so it can be a few metres out. If two big trees are close together, the girth usually settles it.
